Before Shaun Gilmore’s success as a painter, she flourished in modern dance as both choreographer and dancer. “Both sides of my artistic existence have fed one another,” Gilmore says. She describes herself as a “visual choreographer,” with an emphasis on movement. Her larger works present the viewer with several curvilinear arabesques that act like tracks left by an unknown force that traveled through the composition. “I don’t want to give the viewer too much information,” she says. “This way, viewers can step into my paintings and find themselves in a place of discovery.”
